It’s important to understand that in moderation, or when consumed along with a meal, these foods and beverages are okay. They are most damaging when consumed alone.
Protecting Your Teeth
Though tooth enamel cannot be rebuilt, there are many tips for protecting one’s teeth and reducing the effects of dental erosion. Consider the following:
- Wait an hour before brushing after eating acidic foods or drinking acidic beverages (this allows saliva to neutralize the acids and wash them away naturally).
- When drinking a soda, do not swish it around in your mouth. Simply sip and swallow.
- Following an acidic meal, drink a glass of water or milk, or eat a slice of cheese. Calcium-rich foods neutralize acids.
- Chew sugarless gum to promote saliva production. Saliva plays an important role of washing away harmful acids and bacteria.
- Commit to regular dental visits!
