Do You Have A Jaw Pain?

New York NY Dentist near Gramercy Park

An increasing number of Americans experience jaw pain, which many assume is related to their teeth. While this is a valid assumption, however, there are numerous potential causes for jaw pain. Colgate mentions the following: decayed or abscessed teeth, gum infection or periodontal disease, teeth grinding (bruxism), temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) or injury to the jaw. Given the various causes, it is wise to contact your dentist right away if you’re suffering from pain in your jaw.

Depending on the source of an individual’s jaw pain, treatment might include a dental filling, root canal therapy or tooth extraction, while gum infections can be treated with antibiotics or deep scaling. Yet, when jaw pain is attributed to temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMD, treatment varies from person to person. For instance, pain associated with TMD might be from muscle spasms within the jaw joint. In turn, it could stem from misalignment of an individual’s bite, leading to inflammation and pain. Even so, other causes could be injury to the jaw, arthritis, cluster headaches, angina, ear infections, cysts, sinus infection or stress.

In essence, it’s not clear whether symptoms associated with TMD are actual causes of it or expressions of it. Whatever the case, those dealing with jaw pain might experience trouble with daily routines including eating and work-related tasks. Sleep patterns may also be affected, and this often adds stress to an already exacerbating condition.

Though somewhat of a mystery, jaw pain can be treated with multiple solutions and remedies. The key is determining what’s causing your pain.
