Periodontal Therapy with our Certified Periodontist
Poor gum health should never be ignored. While slightly inflamed or irritated gums can often be treated with better oral hygiene habits, gums that are infected or diseased need to be addressed at your dental office. At Gramercy Dental Center, we offer the most proven dental treatments for periodontal disease. Whether you have mild gingivitis or advanced gum disease, we are confident we can restore your gum health. We have a board certified periodontist on staff who understands how to effectively manage gum disease in patients of all ages.
Scaling and Root Planing
Gum disease develops when plaque hardens (calculus) and accumulates along the tooth surfaces below and above the gum line. If tartar and calculus continue to build up, the hard substance can push the gums away from the tooth roots and cause deep pockets of tissue to form. Bacteria and food debris often get trapped in these pockets, which further destroy these connective tissues and accelerates the infection. Left untreated, the gum disease can spread and cause underlying bone destruction and tooth loss.
Fortunately, there is a straightforward procedure that is designed to stop the progression of gum disease and promote the reattachment of healthy tissues to the teeth. We call this procedure scaling and root planing, but you may know it as a “deep cleaning.” Scaling and root planing involves the use of special hand-held tools and ultrasonic cleaning methods to effectively remove bacteria, hardened plaque and diseased tissues beneath the gums. Our periodontist or hygienist will also smooth out the root surfaces of your teeth to further encourage reattachment of the gums. This deep cleaning helps to eliminate deep pockets within the gums and puts a halt to the progression of serious periodontal disease.
Your treatment plan for periodontal therapy will depend on the severity of your gum disease. However, you can trust that we will go over your plan in detail so that you are confident in what we will be doing to restore your gums back to optimal health. As with any of our procedures at Gramercy Dental Center, your comfort and time are respected at every step of the process.
